MONDAINO 21 km away from Riccione
Mondaino origins are lost in the past: in fact, they date back to Umbrian times. Afterwards, the lands were inhabited by the Etruscans and, finally, by the Romans, who named the place Vicus dianensis, probably after a temple dedicated to goddess Diana.
The Paleontological Museum is a very important place where it is possible to admire, among others, numerous fish fossils. During the month of August, the famous Palio del Daino is held there, a historic re-enactment recalling the Middle Ages, with entertainment events, contests between the town's medieval quarters, for adults and children.

TAVOLETO 24 km away from Riccione
Tavoleto was one of the most ancient fortresses in the Duchy of Urbino.
It owes its name to the way in which timber was manufactured in the past: once turned into boards, it was transported to the Tevere sources from where it "slid" up to Rome.
Surrounded by ancient walls, there is no trace of the fortress that Francesco di Giorgio Martini designed for Duke Federico. The fortress was torn down in 1865 and a gothic-looking castle was built in its place, which is already a noble residence: but the shape of its walls, to the rear of the public gardens, still evidences the structures of the ancient fortress. |

San Leo, already mentioned as Montefeltro, is 583 metres above sea level, in Val Malrecchia (SS 258). It is located on a huge massif that is completely unclimbable and can only be accessed through a single road opened in the rock. On the highest peak of the spur, you can see the impregnable Fortress, remodelled by Francesco di Giorgio Martini, in the 15th century, working for Federico lll from Montefeltro. The city hosted Dante ("Vassi in San Leo...") and St. Francis of Assisi, who received Mount Verna as a gift from Count Orlando of Chiusi in Casentino (1213). The room where the two men met is still preserved. The Earl of Cagliostro was locked up in the fortress, which was turned into a jail during the pontifical rule. He died there in 1795.
